Underarm Boils
Underarm boils are very painful if they are not properly treated. Many people suffer from boils that occur in the armpit regions. Boils developing in the underarms are not only painful but also may cause fever. A chronic underarm boil infection may even disrupt daily life activities. Boils can be of various types. They differ from each other based on their formation, nature of development and location. Boils can crop up due to several reasons. You may take a look at the following factors responsible for causing boils in the under arms.
The Causes of Underarm Boils
Boils mainly occur due to the incidence of folliculitis. The folliculitis is the process by which the hair follicles get infected with bacteria. Folliculitis can occur in any region of the body that has hair follicles. Hair follicles may develop boils when the hair is exposed to friction due to physical movements. Sometimes, the hair follicles get filled up with foreign particles causing spread of infection by the bacterium named Staphylococcus aureus.
The armpit regions have highly developed sweat glands. Due to excess sweating sometimes the duct connecting the gland and the hair follicle gets blocked with the residue formed due to drying up of the sweat. This results incidence of infection causing the development of underarm boils. Sometimes the boils become very severe in nature and occur at repeated intervals. Under such circumstances the only way to get rid of the boils is by removing the glands with the aid of surgical treatment.
The oil glands or the sebaceous glands are also present in the underarm region. The glands produce an oily substance called sebum. The roots of the hair growing in the underarm region are connected to a muscle underneath the epidermal part of the skin. Just above the muscles the sebaceous gland exists. The oil produce by the gland works as a lubricant for free movement of the hair shaft. When the tract connecting the gland and the hair follicle gets jammed or clogged with impurities a boil develops as reddened pus filled nodes.
Another cause of underarm boils is due to the incidence of a chronic disease called hidradenitis suppurativa. Though this condition of recurrent boils occurs very rarely but when they occur they can be quite troublesome. The occurrence of Hidradenitis is characterized by development of several boils at a certain place that are repetitive in nature. The sufferer would be victim of big sized pus filled lumps that cause unbearable pain and even high chilling fever.
The hidradenitis, though not an infection but the exact cause behind the incidence of the skin infection is not yet clinically established. The following are some facts related to the skin disorder hydradenitis.

The skin disease is only restricted to the folds of the body and they mainly occur in the armpits, groins and the area under the breasts.
Women are reported to be more prone to the disease than the male counterpart.
The disease may develop due to the total blockage of the hair follicles with external dirt inviting the common bacteria causing boils to make the situation worst.
According to some scientists the cause behind the disease might be genetic transference. It has been noticed that the root cause behind individuals suffering from the skin disorder may be the result of a family ailments that is transferred generation after generation through genes.
Some say the cause of the development of the condition called hidradenitis suppurativa may be due to hormonal misbalances. The condition of the disease become severe in form before a woman’s menstrual cycle and gets mild after the menopause.

But it would be always good for you to visit any specialized dermatologist who especially has experience in hydradenitis treatment. The dermatologist would probably prescribe you with a long term medication therapy as short term antibiotics can hardly help in remission of the condition. Even lancing of the boils would not be an ideal option for treatment as in many cases the condition of the disease further gets severe in nature. The following are some skin treatments that are generally recommended to fight against the disease.
A hormone pill often works well for several patients suffering from the skin disease.
Though the main cause behind the development of the disease is not infection but many patients have been reported to be benefited by using long term prescribed antibiotics like etracycline and erythromycin.
The drug called acitretin is quite helpful in reducing the intensity of the underarm boils or the armpit boils caused due to the condition called hydradenitis suppurativa. But the drug is generally not recommended to women as this drug is responsible for hindering the fertility of the fetus.
