Staph Boils

Staph boils are caused due to a special type of bacterium named Staphylococcus aureus. This bacterium can get inside the skin through any wound or incision on the surface of the skin. It is present in large quantities in air around us. The bacteria can also be sourced from the very surface of the skin of the sufferer. Many individuals carry the germs of the staph boils from their birth. Even though they seem to appear to be healthy and fit, they can carry colonies of the bacteria on their skin surface as well as in the nasal chambers.

Patients of diabetes and other immune related diseases like HIV positive are frequently attacked by boils as their nasal chamber is the store house of staph bacteria. The staph bacteria are responsible for causing many skin diseases and staph boils are one of them. Boils may occur close to the skin surface of the epidermis or may also occur on top of the skin. Sometimes on squeezing the boils, the bacterium may spread further and may even infect the deeper tissues of the skin and thus make itself more intense in form.

Staph Boils and FolliculitisStaph Boils

Folliculitis involves the process of infecting the hair follicles and causing the development of boils. The hair follicles that are mainly susceptible to boils are those of the regions where the sebaceous gland and the sweat glands are highly active. The areas like face, armpits, the groin areas and the buttocks are the commonly attacked by the incidence of boils. The following are the symptoms of the folliculitis.

  • Individuals often miss to detect this very first stage of the infection. The very initial stage is development of a slight itching sense over the infected area. The infection also gets a bit painful when touched.
  • The next stage is the reddening of the skin. The skin surface becomes red in color as well as slightly swollen.
  • The swollenness gradually increases in a round form. It almost resembles a lump of blood and also develops white or amber colored pus at its middle.
  • As the boil becomes matured it starts to discharge the pus along with a stream of blood.
  • Within a week or so the boil gradually dries up as the immune system of the body fights against the staph germs of the body.
The staph bacteria also cause boils by infecting the wounds as well. The bacteria can enter through any fissure or opening on the skin surface and can cause the development of boils. There are also other types of staph infections. You may take a look at the following infections that are caused by the staph bacteria.

Furuncles - The furuncles are the more advanced form of furuncilitis. The furuncles are mainly caused due to infected hair follicle. Sometimes multiple hair follicles get affected by the bacteria at a time to form a furuncle. Unlike furunculitis, furuncles grow very large in size and pass out huge volumes of pus. The skin areas of the body that are mainly affected by the incidence of furunculitis are face, neck, inner thighs, buttocks, armpits, especially in the areas where the small hairs are subjected under frequent friction. A cluster of several furuncles together is known as carbuncles. Individuals suffering from carbuncles are very painful and may also cause high chilling fever.

Impetigo - It is a type of staph boil that develops on the skin of hand and legs. Its occurrence is mainly common among children but it can affect teenagers and adults as well. Impetigo is characterized by blisters or small nodules that develop a honey like crust on infected skin surface. The germ causing the boil is superficially rooted with the skin. It does not cause much pain but can often be accompanied by the sense of itching. On continued scratching the bacteria gets the opportunity to spread to the other unaffected parts of the skin.

Cellulites - It is a form of staph boil, which involves the skin surface as well as the tissue beneath the skin surface. The infected area becomes red in appearance, becomes swelled with persistent pain. When affected by the infection the person can feel feverish and unwell. Though it can affect skin of any part of the body, cellulites are mainly common in the skin of legs.

Hordeolum - It is also known as sty. It occurs on the skin of the eyelid. The eyelid gets swelled up accompanied by pain, uncomfortable eyelids along with a warm feeling. The infection occurs when the hair follicles get affected by the staph bacteria. The glands connecting the duct of the hair follicles also get swelled up.

If you are suffering from recurring staph boils infection, you may take up the following general preventive measures to reduce the incidence of boils.
