Skin Staph Infection

Staph Infection

Skin staph infection can be caused due to several reasons. There are about 30 kinds of bacteria that are responsible for causing skin infections. Most people carry bacterial germs in their nasal chamber, mouth, mammary glands, urinary, intestinal and other respiratory glands. The infection at first starts with a wound. Generally, a wound or a skin opening gets infected with the bacterial invasion. The bacterium that is responsible for causing skin infection is known as Staphylococcus aureus.

About 25% of the global population carries the bacterial germ with them. The bacteria may also enter the body through the feet from the floor. Skin staph infection can be of various forms. Some of them are superficial skin inflammations while some are deep rooted ones. Cellulitis is a type of skin staph infection that is characterized by inflammation of the tissues beneath the epidermal part of the skin. Individuals having weak immune system or suffering from immune damaging diseases are prone to the attack of the staph bacteria.

Skin Staph Infection Symptoms

The following are some symptoms of skin staph infection.

  • Generally a staph infection starts with an open sore. The bacteria causing the infection enter inside the skin through the opening or the wound and then spread further.
  • The localized infection then takes the shape of a swelled skin lump which is usually tender and soft.
  • The infected area then becomes reddened, warm and painful when touched.
  • If the infection further spreads then it may be accompanied by chilling fever as well.
  • The staph infections that develop as boils are characterized by a pus filled lump. The pus is nothing but a mixture of bacteria, white blood cells, dead skin tissues and some protein elements.
  • When the boil becomes matured it forms a head through which the pus is gradually discharged. The pus usually flows out along with a stream of blood. One has to be very careful in dealing with pus as it is highly contagious in nature.
  • When the pus flows out completely the wound dries up. In case of deep rooted staph infection like the carbuncles, the skin surface is often left with a scar. Sometimes, the infection is characterized by pit like formions as well.
So, if you find that you have been attacked by a skin staph infection you are required to be careful in dealing with it. The following are some types of staph infection.

Types of Skin Staph Infection

Staph infections can be of various types. The staph bacteria may be responsible for causing skin disorders like folliculitis or hair shaft infection, cellutitis, furuncles, impetigo, TSS or toxic shock syndrome, SSS or scaled skin syndrome and such.

Toxic shock syndrome and scaled skin syndrome are some common types of skin infections that are quite severe in nature.

Toxic shock syndrome is a complex form of skin staph infection. The infected area is characterized by sun burned rash like formation on the skin surface which gradually spreads. The infection is accompanied by severe headache, sore throat, high chilling fever of around 105 degree F. Side effects like diarrhea and dehydration are also caused due to the incidence of the infection.

Scaled Skin Syndrome The scaled skin syndrome is a type of infection that generally attacks children below the age of five. The skin disorder is characterized by mild fever and the infected area is characterized by the accumulation of large number of white blood cells. The white blood cells actually fight against the germs causing the infection to get rid of them. Due to the action taken by the white blood cells to kill the staph bacteria the pus is formed. The yellowish white pus flows out of the skin infection when it gets matured.

A red colored rash generally develops on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body. The skin develops scales and blister like formations. The skin has a look as if the area has received a burn.

Our body has the natural ability to get rid of the staph infections but sometimes the infection can turn out to be quite complex one as well. The infection often plays a vital role in aggravating various types of disorders. The incidence of arthritis becomes severe in form if the individual happens to be suffering from staph infection.

Other staph disorders include the occurrence of bacteremia or the contamination of blood stream with bacteria. The carbuncles are pocket like formations that are generally filled with pus. The deep skin inflammations or cellulites, endocarditis or the inflammation of the valves and the walls of the heart, meningitis or the inflammation of the tissues covering and protecting the spinal chord and brain, osteomyelitis or the inflammation of bone and the bone marrow and pneumonia are some of the harmful effects of staph skin infection.

You may have a look at the following staph infections that require immediate medical supervision.

Chronic Skin Staph Infection Symptoms

  • When the lymp nodes of the groin, armpits and the neck regions becomes swollen and tender in appearance.
  • If the infected area become excessively swollen, red and is companied by intense pain is inflammation. This indicates that the infection has come in contact with the main blood stream of the body.
  • A chronic boil occurring on the face or near the spinal chord area. The brain and the spinal chord may become the victim of the bacterial attack.
If you are suffering from recurrent boil formation, you are recommended to visit a certified doctor. Several times the repeated occurrence of boils is due to the incidence of internal immune damaging diseases like the diabetes, HIV positive and such.
