Boils on Buttocks

Boils on Buttocks

Boils on buttocks are quite troublesome whenever you intend to sit. Boils are categorized into various types. The type of boil that mainly grows in the buttock regions is known as Pilonidal cysts. These cysts are mainly formed due to the occurrence of infection in the hair follicles. The boil takes the formation of a pocket which contains hair and pus. The boils at first start as a soft tender nodule which later on hardens as it gets subjected under pressure due to prolonged period of sitting. People suffering from boils on buttocks suffer generally due to the habit of sitting for long hours.

The Causes of Boils on Buttocks

Boils on buttocks can develop due to several reasons. You may take a look at the following causes of boils on buttocks.

  • One of the common causes behind the development of boils on buttocks is due to ingrown hair. An ingrown hair is the one that grows below the skin surface and then turns down to get inside the skin again with its tip. This causes development of a reddened inflammation on the skin surface.
  • The boil may again be caused due to the intrusion of a splinter or a wood piece inside the skin surface. The bacteria causing boils then get in side the opening of the skin and causes development of boils in the buttock region.
  • The sweat glands of the buttocks often get clogged or the ducts of the sweat glands get blocked due to accumulation of dirt and dust in the narrow passages. Sometimes the boils caused due to the infection in the sweat glands are quite painful and often recurrent in nature. So, to get rid of them removal of the sweat glands through surgical operation remains the only option left for the sufferer.
  • Any wound or scrape inflicted on your buttock skin surface may lead to the development of boils. The bacteria causing boils may get inside the wound opening and infect it. The infected boil surface then gradually grows in size and causes unbearable pain when it gets filled with pus.

The Symptoms of Boils Occurring on Buttocks

The following are the general symptoms of the boils that develop on buttocks.

  • At first the boil starts as a red lump that gradually grows in size. As it gets matured the lump gets filled with pus. The pus is nothing but the mixture of white blood cells, the bacteria responsible for the development of boils, some protein elements and dead skin tissues.
  • When the lump gets completely filled with pus and is on the verge of discharging pus, the color of the pus changes from white to yellow or greenish in appearance.
  • Though boils on buttocks are usually not serious in nature but sometimes the boils can be characterized by multiple formations of tender lumps. They might often be accompanied with unbearable pain and even fever.
  • It is commonly not noticed but before the development of boils on the buttocks there is a sensation of itching around the boils surface.

Boils Treatment

If you are a victim of recurrent boils on buttocks, you may try out the following therapeutic steps to get rid of them completely.

  • Apply heat to the boil area. You may go for a hot tub bath where your boils would be exposed to heat. But make sure of not sitting on the boil as that would further aggravate the condition of the boil infection. You may also place a hot water bottle on the boil area. The application of heat actually helps in accumulation white blood cells and other antibodies in the infection area to fight against the bacteria. You are recommended to go for applying the heat on the boils for a continuous period of at least 15 to 20 minutes at a stretch.
  • If you find that the boil has grown into a large lump and has not yet formed a head as a result of which the pus in not allowed to flow out, you may take the help of a needle to dry out with the drainage of the pus. At first you are advised to sterilize the needle by dipping it in a rubbing alcohol or simply by boiling it in water. You may then make a small incision along the boil surface to let the pus out. After the entire pus flows out apply some antibacterial ointment to it in order to avoid further incidence of infection.
If the boil has already formed a head and is discharging the pustules; you are not required to take the help of the needle to cut open the boil surface.
  • Do not ever try to squeeze or lance the boil surface. It would rather intensify the pain caused due to the boil formation. But to speed up the oozing of the pus you may apply heat and some degree of pressure to get rid of the pus completely.
  • Boils are infectious in nature. The pus which comes out of the boil may cause further development of boils on the other uninfected skin areas. Even who ever will come in contact with the flowing pus may become a victim of the bacteria causing boils. So, while you are under the attack of the boils make sure that you do not allow your family members, especially children to come close to you. Wash all your garments, bed linens separately in warm water so as to avoid the spread of the infection. It would be always preferred if you use an antibacterial detergent for washing your clothes.
  • You are advised to visit a doctor if you find that in spite of taking up the above mentioned remedial steps the boils on your buttocks are still not in a recovery state after a week or two.

The development of boils along the crevices of the buttocks is a matter of concern and needs immediate medical supervision. Even the incidence of high fever for long period of time due to the occurrence of boils on buttocks should be treated on medical consultation.
